The hullabaloo about the Indian "Nighties"...

Indian middle class women and their affinity for their obnoxious collection of "Nighties" is not something that is unknown but the reason is unfathomable as to why this piece of clothing, that is nothing but a night wear, is not only an asset for pride but a fashion statement as well!
Every "Guddu", "Chikoo", "Raju" or even "Pinky's" mother would ostentatiously clothe themselves in these attires (if at all I may have to call them one) and go to their respective children' pick up points or even to the local vegetable vendors.
Some would even audaciously throw in a small scarf like thing which again would resemble their hideous "nighties". But the reason for throwing in that small piece of wrap is again a questionable gesture (not that it covers their modesty in anyway, some even possess such hugely designed assets that even a double sized bedsheet would fall to shame).
These weird night wears come in every size, every shape and every design, some of which may even confuse you with bedsheets, the upholstery or the curtains!
The "nighties" are the most pedestrian piece of attire that has ever been conceived, but they get supremely glorified when worn by some of the Indian 'sisters', 'mothers' or 'wives'. I mean, why? Don't you have anything else in your wardrobe? The day is imminent when a mother would hand down this ceremonial outfit to the next generation who would replicate the same.
The hue and cry about the "nightie" is equivalent to the uproar that is created in these weekly markets that pride in selling everything from a "bra" to anything that's available in the seconds shop. The way some Indian women are in the bid to glorify "nighties" or "maxi" that adorn the rickety stores owned by street hawkers can soon make "Victoria's Secrets" bite the dust!
Every middle class Indian woman's wardrobe would house layers of "nighties", with categories and sub-categories, with meticulous bifurcation, namely, the ones to be worn for 'those' special nights (lingeries aren't our thing!), some specifically to be used at home, some that would be recycled as the mop, but dare you raise the question of discarding them. Some would even sell the old ones in exchange for a flimsy plastic soap case, or a minuscule flower vase!
The "nightie" and Indian women remain like man and wife,  who are so much into each other that very soon, every road, every street, every lane, every by-lane, practically every nook and corner would see processions of nightie clad women turning the torch bearer for transforming this hideously patterned outfit into esteemed designer wears!
